Design Advisory Committee backs signs at 283 Main Street, plans tighter sign processing

The Great Barrington Design Advisory Committee voted 4-0 on June 17, 2026, to issue a favorable recommendation for wall and blade signs proposed for 283 Main Street.
Chair Jackie Kain opened the meeting at 5:01 p.m. and the committee approved the minutes from its May 27 meeting as amended, also by a 4-0 vote. During the permits portion of the agenda the committee recorded its recommendation for the 283 Main Street signage application.
Building Inspector Adam Vanderneck joined the committee’s discussion about signs and how the town’s permit-processing procedures could work more smoothly between the Building Department and the Design Advisory Committee. Committee members identified types of signage that they consider not currently permitted and agreed to compile a formal list of those sign types.
Members also agreed to amend the DAC permit application to address the identified gaps and to help speed review and enforcement. The committee did not record any public comments during Citizens’ Speak Time.
The committee adjourned at 6:24 p.m. Next steps noted in the meeting record include preparing the unpermitted-signs list and drafting changes to the permit application for committee review at a future meeting.
