Planning Commission recommends rezoning of portion of 500 N. Centennial to I-2
Summary
The commission voted unanimously to recommend rezoning roughly 0.48 acres of 500 N. The Zeeland Planning Commission on Oct. 2 recommended that about 0.48 acres of the parcel at 500 N. Centennial Ave be rezoned from I-1 (Light Industrial) to I-2 (General Industrial) to allow it to be combined with adjacent Gentex-owned property.
John DePoy of engineering firm Nederveld told the commission the narrow strip in question is owned by ODL Inc., has been leased by Gentex since 2000 and is integrated into Gentex’s 600 N. Centennial parking area. Gentex is pursuing a parcel-line adjustment so it can acquire the strip in fee; DePoy said rezoning the strip to I-2 would maintain consistent zoning across the combined property.
Zoning Administrator Timothy Maday said the parcel at 500 N. Centennial is currently zoned I-1 while the adjoining Gentex campus is zoned I-2, and staff recommends the rezoning to resolve that mismatch. Maday said a formal resolution recommending the change will be drafted for the Planning Commission’s regular November meeting and, following the Commission’s final action, the request will be forwarded to City Council for consideration.
Commissioner Dan Klompmaker moved to recommend the rezoning (Motion 2025.23); the motion was supported by Kevin Klynstra and passed by roll-call vote with all present commissioners voting aye. Absent were Amanda Cooper and Bob Blanton.
Next steps: the Planning Commission will present a resolution at its November meeting and, if adopted, the recommendation will move to City Council for final action.
