Cañon City honors Fire Chief David Delvecio on retirement

The Cañon City Council on June 15 presented a proclamation honoring Fire Chief David Delvecio and declared June 30, 2026, "David Delvecio Day" in recognition of his retirement after a multi‑decade career in fire service.
Mayor Phil read the proclamation noting Delvecio’s selection as chief of North Cumberland, Rhode Island (2009–2011) and his appointment as fire executive officer of the Cañon City Area Fire Protection District in January 2011. Council and fire district leaders credited Delvecio with leading two successful mill levies that funded station construction and staffing improvements and with bringing a positive cultural change to the department.
Tim Payne, chair of the fire district board, credited Delvecio with convening partners to complete a regional E‑911 dispatch effort, guiding the district through difficult transitions and helping complete Station Three. “When you’re laying on a living room floor having a heart attack and you see these guys in blue shirts show up, you’re darn sure glad that mill levy passed,” Payne said.
Chief Delvecio thanked the firefighters and community, reflected on nearly 49 years in the fire service and said he will remain available to assist the city and district after retirement.
The council invited firefighters and family for a photograph, and the proclamation will be dated June 15, 2026. No formal action beyond the proclamation was required.
