Bradford schedules Sept. 10 meeting to finalize fire station contractor as bids exceed budget

The Town of Bradford Select Board scheduled a special meeting for Tuesday, Sept. 10 at 6 p.m. to finalize contractor selection and sign a notice to award and a notice to proceed for the new fire station after bids exceeded the project budget.
Board members discussed next steps and timing, including a preconstruction meeting set for Friday, Sept. 13. Officials said the contractor may have to adjust the stormwater collection system if they encounter significant ledge on the site before construction proceeds.
The board reviewed specific cost-cutting options presented at the meeting: use of recycled asphalt for the station driveway instead of a paved driveway; reducing contractor overhead from 15% to 10%; and removing furniture and FF&E from the contract scope. Select Board member Edward Nevells said the town has voted multiple times to approve construction and financing for the station and that the board does not expect to cancel the project.
Resident Errol asked that Chris be his point person for road-related work tied to the project. Desi noted that without a sprinkler system, an ambulance might not be able to park at the station; Desi added that if no one sleeps at the site and shifts are limited to eight hours, a sprinkler system requirement may not apply.
Members noted the town’s Bond Bank date is Sept. 11 and suggested contacting the office of U.S. Sen. Susan Collins and consulting a Mrs. Woodcock for potential additional financing or guidance. The board formally set the additional Select Board meeting on Sept. 10 to finalize contractor selection and signing of notices.
Next steps: the board will hold the Sept. 10 special meeting to sign the notice to award and notice to proceed, then meet with the contractor at a preconstruction session on Sept. 13; the town’s Bond Bank date is Sept. 11.
