At the June 3 meeting members of the Township of Mahwah Board of Adjustment agreed to form a subcommittee to study three pending New Jersey bills that board members said could affect local land‑use regulations.
Board member Mr. Calijone identified the bills by number and subject: S1766 (conversion of certain office parks and retail centers to mixed‑use properties), S2680 (accessory dwelling units) and S1836 (religious and nonprofit organizations). Board Attorney Mr. John Conte said he had not yet read the bills and could not comment on details; he noted that if the State enacts changes, municipalities must comply. Chairman Mr. Cannava proposed forming a subcommittee; Mr. Calijone, Mr. Molfetta and Mr. Sitar volunteered to serve. Mr. Conte suggested the subcommittee consult Township Planner Ms. Russell for technical guidance.
Members said the subcommittee will research the bills and may present findings or recommendations to the Town Council; the item will be discussed again at a future meeting. No formal vote on a recommendation to the Town Council was recorded in the minutes.
