West Point council approves street, sign and service contracts and submits rec center grant

At its meeting the West Point City Council approved several routine contracts and grants and authorized staff to move forward on applications and payments.

The council authorized a consulting contract to design and bid a gravel roadway extension from 13th Street to Plaza Drive that will provide a second access to the area; members described the work as engineered gravel with side-ditch drainage and not a paved phase at this time. The city also approved a contract with Advanced Consulting Engineers to establish legal descriptions and footprints for new signage at the north end of town where substantial fill is planned.

The council awarded an open contract to Hugo Plumbing & Heating to supply materials and services for city facilities, a regular vendor choice recommended by the auditor from whom the council heard the recommendation. Council also approved payment #1 of $90,056 to J AEO Consulting Group for West Point levy improvements.

On grants, council voted to submit a CCCFF grant application for the recreation center before the Feb. 15 deadline. In the meeting transcript staff read the requested amount as "562 th000"; council members said they would submit the application and withdraw it later if a turn-back tax or other funding source made the application ineligible.

Other routine actions included approval of the Sunshine Center FY2026 budget submission to the Northeast Nebraska Area Agency on Aging and approval of several temporary designated liquor licenses for community events.

Where motions were made and votes taken, council approved the items and authorized the mayor to sign relevant documents.
