Sweet Home posts annual safety plan for comment, adds cardiac and transportation annexes

The Sweet Home Central School District put its district-wide school safety plan online for a 30-day public review and recommended two appendix additions that officials say strengthen emergency response.
"It's my pleasure to lead the district safety committee for another year," said Mr. Feldman, who presented the plan. He told the board the committee met several times and is responsible for the district-wide safety plan and building-level emergency response plans. "We are required per New York State Education Law 2801 and the New York Commissioner's Regulations 155.17 that we must adopt a district-wide school safety plan and building emergency response plan for each of our school buildings," he said.
The safety committee recommended two new appendices be included in the district-wide plan. Appendix 8 is a cardiac emergency response annex that implements Disha's Law; it identifies signs of potential cardiac arrest, lists AED locations, and notes staff certified to administer CPR and use AEDs. "It identifies signs of potential cardiac arrests and steps to take in the event of a cardiac emergency at school," Mr. Feldman said.
Appendix 9 is a transportation annex that identifies relocation and staging areas (administration proposed the high school and middle school as primary sites), lists incident response team members and contact information, inventories vehicles and drivers available during an emergency (including electric buses), and sets out parent-notification procedures for incidents involving buses. Mr. Feldman said the annex also lists contacts for transportation dispatch personnel and head bus drivers.
Officials said a redacted version of the district-wide safety plan will be posted for comment from tomorrow through July 17. Following any suggested changes, the board is expected to act on the plan at its August meeting; the district must then submit district-wide and building-level plans to the New York State Education Department by Oct. 1.
Board members asked whether substitutes and other staff receive orientation on emergency procedures; presenters said safety information and maps of response protocols are included in sub packets and classroom postings. One board member encouraged broader promotion of the comment period through the district's weekly announcements.
The board did not take a final vote on the safety plan at the meeting; administration will return to the board with any public comments and edits in August.
