Nederland considers IGA with fire district to expand wildfire mitigation capacity

Town staff presented a proposal to explore an intergovernmental agreement (IGA) with the Nederland Fire Protection District (NedFire) to allow the district to perform expanded wildfire mitigation work on behalf of the town and to pursue grant funding for that work.
"NedFire has been working on building a new wildfire crew and part of that is the ability to do more mitigation work," staff member John said, explaining the IGA could increase capacity, allow coordinated grant applications and use the town’s trained staff and equipment in a more flexible way.
Trustees and staff discussed potential project locations such as Moose Meadows, Windgate and Rightway, and raised possible partners including Boulder County and utilities. Trustees also focused on operational issues — insurance and training for Sawyer work, decision-making authority on which parcels to treat, and whether private-property mitigation would be included. John said a draft IGA would come back to the board for approval and that staff would pursue grant opportunities in the interim.
Trustees expressed general support for moving quickly where grants are available and for designing the agreement to allow flexibility and prioritization according to the town’s Community Wildfire Protection Plan (CWPP).
What happens next: staff will work with NedFire to draft an IGA and will return to the board with recommended terms and any grant proposals for formal approval.
