At its June 17 meeting the Texas City Commission recognized several long-serving employees, approved a promotion in the fire department, and read a proclamation declaring June as Alzheimer's disease and brain health awareness month.
Mayor Abel Garza and commissioners honored Cheryl Lowen (library), Shelby Webb (police K9 unit), Derek Brubaker (public works/police-public-works), and Ariel Mendoza for milestone service. Chief Dennis Harris presented the promotion of Firefighter Troy Wilson to engineer effective June 17, 2026; Wilson thanked his family and colleagues for support.
The mayor read a proclamation naming June as "Alzheimer's disease and brain health awareness month," attested by the city secretary, and Barbara White, who chairs the Texas City Walk for Alzheimer's, invited residents to the Walk on Oct. 10 at Blocker Middle School and urged donations and participation.
Staff also announced community events and outreach: Juneteenth activities (poetry slam, day-in-the-park, parade and movie-in-the-park series) and a hurricane town hall scheduled for June 25 with outreach and preparedness information and giveaways.
What's next: Community outreach events will proceed as scheduled and the clerk will include recognition and proclamation language in the official record.
