Monona County supervisors approve hires, road project predesign and certify primary election results

The Monona County Board of Supervisors on June 9 approved multiple personnel hires and authorizations, approved an Iowa DOT predesign agreement for a bridge realignment, adopted a tax-abatement resolution, and certified the June 2 primary election results.
The Monona County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved a series of personnel actions and administrative items during its June 9 meeting in Onawa.
On motions recorded during the session, the board authorized the county to purchase a Chevrolet Tahoe for the Sheriff’s Department from Karls Automotive for $53,740 and gave Sheriff Kevin Ewing permission to advertise for a Jail/Dispatch Lead position; the board also tabled proposed changes to the Sheriff’s Department memorandum of understanding for later consideration. The board adopted Resolution SR 26-32 to hire Larry Parks as a Seasonal Roadside Operator at $21.00 per hour; SR 26-33 to transfer Andrew Blatchford into the full-time Area Road Foreman position at an annual salary of $69,065.37 (effective June 9, 2026, with a 90-day probationary period); SR 26-34 to hire Darwin Crosgrove as a Seasonal Roadside Operator at $21.00 per hour pending a pre-employment drug test; and SR 26-35 to hire Ronald Scheer as a Seasonal Roadside Operator at $21.00 per hour pending a drug test. The board also acknowledged receipt of a resignation from Darwin Crosgrove.
The board approved an Iowa Department of Transportation predesign agreement to realign Nutmeg Avenue with Iowa 175 as part of the Little Sioux River Bridge replacement project BRF-175-1(88)—38-67.
As Drainage Trustees, the board accepted a petition for a spot cleanout on the Sherman DD (filed by Sandra Cutler) and approved drainage claims presented to the drainage office. The trustees voted to assess Oliver Lake Lateral 1 after a planned cleanout project is completed.
Back in regular session, the board adopted Resolution 2026-11 to abate $1,414 in 2024 taxes to be collected in 2025–2026 for parcel SRCU #8342-01-4-50-012, owned by Ethan Kroll.
At 11:30 a.m. the board convened as the Official Canvassers and adopted Resolution 2026-12 certifying the June 2, 2026, Primary Election results. The canvass reported 846 in-person voters, 201 accepted absentee ballots and a total turnout of 1,047. The board recorded no obvious clerical errors during the canvass.
The board also approved the May 26 minutes, approved county claims, set June payroll dates (pay periods June 7–20 to be paid June 26 and June 21–30 to be paid June 30), acknowledged a Manure Management Annual Update for Loess Hills Poultry Facility #71250, and authorized the chairman to sign a Nyhart Service Agreement. All recorded votes on motions and resolutions were unanimous (Ayes: Bo Fox, Tom Brouillette, Vincent Phillips; Nays: None).
