Local landscaper urges county to expand Ken's Lake and rethink water storage

During the public-comment portion of Grand County’s June 16 meeting, local irrigation contractor Corey Boyd and Grand County Water Conservancy District board member Kevin Clyde urged county attention to water storage and practical watering guidance.
Boyd, who maintains local irrigation systems, told commissioners many elderly residents are anxious after reading press guidance and that watering practices should reflect local soils (sandy soils in Moab respond differently than clay) and topography (water on hills often runs off). He emphasized that ground water availability differs from strained surface-water sources, and urged investment in infrastructure such as enlarging Ken's Lake or damming the canyon inflows to capture runoff for irrigation and flood control.
Kevin Clyde thanked the commission for its work and noted the complexity of water projects countywide. Commissioners acknowledged the concerns and indicated water-storage and infrastructure projects remain long-term priorities that require technical study and multiagency partnerships.
No formal action was taken at the meeting; commissioners said staff would continue to coordinate with water-district partners and consider infrastructure planning.
