Grand County approves 2026 Cooperative Wildfire System agreement with state

The Grand County Commission unanimously approved a 2026 Cooperative Wildfire System (CWS) agreement with the Utah Division of Forestry, Fire & State Lands on June 2, committing local resources to prevention, preparedness, and response in exchange for state financial protection for major wildfire incidents.
Emergency Management Director Kate Finley described the CWS as a system in which the state provides financial protection for costly wildfires if local governments commit to agreed prevention and response measures. Commissioner Mike McCurdy moved to approve the agreement as amended, pending completion of legal review; the motion carried 7–0.
Commissioner Brian Martinez asked for assurance that the agreement would not conflict with a separate Wildland Urban Interface agreement the commission planned to consider at an upcoming meeting. County Attorney Stephen Stocks and county administration indicated the CWS approval would be coordinated with other agreements.
