Yutan officials discuss possible city sales tax, cite $140,000 revenue estimate

City officials discussed exploring a municipal sales tax at the Feb. 17 Yutan City Council meeting as a potential revenue source for property-tax relief and local infrastructure.
Administrator Oliva told the council and mayor that preliminary analysis suggests a sales tax could generate around $140,000 a year, in part from remote sales collected from online retailers. He and Mayor Matt Thompson said the revenue could be placed in a sinking fund for street repairs and other infrastructure or used for direct property-tax relief. No formal resolution or vote was taken; the discussion was exploratory and would require a future formal proposal and voter approval if state law requires it.
Councilmembers asked staff to continue studying the concept and to prepare any necessary background, revenue estimates and public-notice language for a future meeting if they choose to proceed.
