Gray honors Eleanor Miriam Bisbee with Boston Post Cane on milestone birthday

The Gray Town Council presented the Boston Post Cane to Eleanor Miriam Bisbee during the council’s meeting, honoring the longtime Gray resident for her community service and longevity. Town Clerk Brett Barton introduced Bisbee and described the cane as a New England tradition dating to 1909 that recognizes the town’s eldest resident.
Friends and relatives rose to congratulate Bisbee and to share memories. Jean Humphrey asked permission to read a letter and then read Miriam’s written credo aloud, including passages such as, “I believe in the moral leadership of Jesus, whose life exemplified the virtues of honesty and kindness,” which Humphrey said reflected Bisbee’s character. Carol West and other attendees recalled Bisbee’s years writing for the Gray News, her seamstress work and the decades she spent volunteering at the Maine Wildlife Park, where a beaver was named in her honor.
Barton and other councilors invited attendees to join a group photograph and offered applause and congratulations. Councilors encouraged residents to visit Bisbee at the Ledgewood facility, and the assembled crowd celebrated her birthday — she is noted in remarks as turning 104 on Oct. 15.
The presentation concluded with applause and brief remarks from family members; no formal council action was required beyond the ceremonial presentation. The council then recessed briefly before returning to other agenda items.
