The Sullivan County Commissioners voted unanimously May 19 to adopt Resolution 2026-9, creating a real estate tax rebate for county fire and emergency medical services volunteers effective Jan. 1 through Dec. 31, 2026. Commissioner Brian Hoffman moved the resolution and Commissioner Darlene Fenton seconded the motion.
Commissioner Scott D. Myers said the board expanded the program’s eligibility for 2026 to include family trusts and limited liability companies where the county can verify the volunteer has a financial interest in the property and that it is their full-time domicile. "For the 2025 tax year, 98 volunteers received a combined total of $18,789.92," Myers said, and he thanked volunteers for supporting county residents.
The resolution does not change the underlying tax rate; rather, it directs county administration to apply rebates to qualifying properties for the 2026 tax year. The board approved the measure unanimously and took no opposition or amendments during the meeting.
The action follows the commissioners’ recognition of Emergency Medical Services Week and Emergency Medical Services for Children Day earlier in the meeting. No implementation timetable beyond the 2026 tax-year effective dates was specified in the meeting record.
