Adam Churchill told the Nehawka Board of Trustees he has applied to Nebraska Game and Parks for a campground grant that would fund tree plantings and other improvements intended to attract wildlife and increase visitation.
Churchill asked for public help with cleanup and restoration work to prepare the campground for a May 2025 target. “They are going to help grow the campground by planting trees and encouraging wildlife to visit Nehawka,” the minutes record.
Representatives from the Rusling Water Encampment — Ryan Shelburne and Dennis Souba — provided a reading on the encampment’s history, described a well-attended public event in September and presented a donation to the village for use of the campground. Shelburne and Souba asked trustees to allow the group to reserve the campsite for a private, closed event in March; the minutes record the request but do not show a board decision at that meeting.
Trustees did not record a formal vote on the grant application or the event request in the Nov. 13 minutes. Churchill encouraged community volunteers to assist with cleanup and restoration to meet the project timeline for spring 2025.
The board will consider any formal grant award or campsite reservation in a future meeting when additional details and approvals from Nebraska Game and Parks or Cass County zoning (if required) are available.
