Nehawka trustees appoint clerk/treasurer, approve permit and allow state contact for flood aid

The Village of Nehawka Board of Trustees met Oct. 9 at the Nehawka Community Building and approved a slate of routine items while taking several personnel and administrative steps.
Pro Tem Chad Krueger called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. and the board voted to approve prior meeting minutes, the treasurer's report and presented claims. The board later reviewed an itemized claims list totaling $15,530.59, which includes a $2,278 annual flood insurance renewal and a $2,828 water supplier charge to Cass County Rural Water District No. 1.
McKenna Sobota affirmed her acceptance of the clerk/treasurer position; the board approved a motion to offer the position (mover: Ian Begemann; seconder: Pat Neu). Trustee Matt Anson recorded an abstention; Chairman Tim Dineen was absent. Sobota's official start date was recorded as Nov. 4.
The board approved a building permit for 512 Lincoln Street following a report from Zoning and Planning Commission Chairman Gene Monroe that the planning board had approved the plan with no variance required. That motion passed (mover: Ian Begemann; seconder: Chad Krueger) with Anson abstaining and Dineen absent.
The trustees also reviewed a notice from the Nebraska Department of Natural Resources that the state received special funding for flood-prone properties and learned one property in the village would qualify. By motion (mover: Matt Anson; seconder: Chad Krueger) the board authorized the State of Nebraska to contact the property owner to inform them of the assistance available.
Tom Farrell of Miller Farrell Insurance distributed a coverage summary and said he would submit an updated renewal quote by Oct. 18; the board discussed cyber-coverage options and coverage tied to a campground parcel. In public comment, resident June Bennett asked about a recent Papillion Sanitation fee increase; the board said Papillion Sanitation holds the village's exclusive contract for trash service and noted recycling pickup can be delayed up to about 10 days.
The meeting adjourned at 8:00 p.m.
What happens next: McKenna Sobota is scheduled to begin Nov. 4; JEO Consulting will forward the updated street plan to the board; guardrail quotes and some infrastructure items remain tabled to the November meeting.
