Nehawka trustees approve ARPA-funded hydrant replacements, accept electrical bid for water shack

Chairman Tim Dineen and the Nehawka Board of Trustees approved using American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds to replace two aging fire hydrants and associated water valves, and accepted a bid to update electrical service to the village water shack.

The action followed a maintenance report from Ryan Adams, who told trustees that watershed piping work and ballfield winterization are complete, sewer plant cleaning is done and all water lines were flushed. Adams identified two hydrants that need repair — at Main and Washington and another by the basketball courts — and said he is investigating installing a canopy to prevent sewer-line freezing this winter. “The bus stop is up and running and the kids love it,” Adams said when summarizing other maintenance activity.

Trustee Ian Begemann moved to prioritize hydrant replacement using ARPA funds; Trustee Matt Anson seconded and the motion carried with the board voting in favor. The minutes record that the board determined part of the ARPA allocation had already been committed to pipe repair and that replacing the two hydrants was the first priority. The board then accepted an electrical bid to bring the water shack up to code and agreed to defer separate ballfield electrical work to a later date.

Trustees also discussed follow-up measures to reduce freeze risk and ongoing pipe-repair needs; the board did not set a specific contractor timetable in the minutes. The meeting record shows maintenance and infrastructure work will continue to be coordinated with village staff and brought back to a future meeting for further direction.

The trustees approved the motion to proceed with hydrant replacements and accepted the water-shack electrical bid during the Nov. 13, 2024 meeting. The board adjourned at 8:00 p.m.
