Yutan planner directed to update comprehensive plan to align with state highway realignment

Community Planner Costa asked the Yutan City Council on May 19 to begin a self-initiated update of the city's Comprehensive Plan to make the document more accessible and better reflect local goals and an anticipated state highway realignment.

Costa told the council the current plan, prepared by an outside consulting firm, contains dense legal language and lacks sufficient local context. He proposed simplifying the text, making the future land use map consistent with the highway timeline, and presenting a revised draft to the council in September or October, while acknowledging that final details of the highway project may not be available until the following spring.

Planning Commission Chair Vandenack said the commission supports simplifying the plan and aligning it with local infrastructure needs and projected growth. Councilmember Smith urged moving forward immediately and noted that adjustments could be made later if the highway realignment requires changes. Council President Schimenti commended the Planning Commission and Costa for first engaging local landowners, saying that understanding owner intentions improves planning outcomes.

The council reached consensus to direct Planner Costa to proceed with the updates as discussed and to return with a draft for council review in the fall. No formal ordinance or regulatory change was approved at the meeting.
