Wingate reports Highway 74 water main break, low pressure in Glenns and multiple sewer blockages

Public Works Director Eugene Jones reported to the Board of Commissioners on May 19 that the town experienced a main water line break on Highway 74 over the weekend and crews installed a temporary repair. Jones said a permanent repair will be required and noted the break occurred roughly 100 feet from a previous waterline failure earlier this year.
Jones also reported five sewer blockages during the week and said the towns Jet Vac is aging and no longer serviceable due to parts unavailability; Union County has been allowing the town to use the countys Jet Vac to respond to sewer issues. He said all park water fountains had been repaired.
On a separate but related water issue, Mayor Hamill asked whether a chronic low-pressure problem in the Glenns neighborhood had been resolved. Jones replied it has not been resolved and said the town hopes tying into a county line will restore adequate pressure and fire flow; until that tie-in is completed, the Glenns area continues to experience insufficient pressure. Resident Bea Colson thanked Jones for recent drainage repairs in her neighborhood.
Interim Town Manager Karen Wingo noted Lt. James Maye of the Union County Sheriffs Office could not attend but supplied the May 2026 UCSO report (Exhibit C). Wingo also reminded the public the Summer Fun Festival is scheduled June 6 from 5-9 p.m.
No formal board action was taken on the infrastructure items at the meeting; staff will continue to coordinate repairs and county-side connections.
