The Wingate Board of Commissioners voted unanimously on May 19 to rezone a 2.72-acre portion of parcel 09015015 from RA-20 to B-6 at the request of Wingate University.
Planner Lee Jenson told the board the parcel sits beside the university stadium and that the towns Wingate 2030 land-use plan identifies the area as University Campus. Staff and the Joint Land Use Board recommended approval; the rezoning was presented as a straight rezoning with no conditions attached. Commissioner Greg Doyle moved to approve the rezoning petition; Commissioner Martin Graves seconded and the motion was approved unanimously.
The university told the town in its application that a parcel purchased in the mid-1990s was never rezoned when it was combined with the original parcel and that the institution plans to build an athletic training facility on the portion currently zoned RA-20. The staff report notes the request would make the zoning consistent with campus uses. No conditions or special uses were attached to the approval at the meeting.
The boards action authorizes the change on the municipal zoning map; next steps are administrative (recording the change and updating zoning maps and permits). No public objections or additional stipulations were recorded during the hearing.
