Reidsville planning board discusses alternates, term limits and downtown updates

The Reidsville Planning Board used part of its Sept. 18 meeting to hear routine staff reports and discuss proposed administrative changes in the forthcoming Unified Development Ordinance (UDO).
Jason, planning staff, reminded members of a steering committee meeting scheduled for Oct. 7 at City Hall (dinner at 5:00, meeting to follow). He reported one new downtown permit for an art studio/retail tenant (Thousand And1 Treasures) and noted a conditional rezoning approved by City Council for the TND off Free School Road.
Board members and staff then discussed a UDO proposal to add two alternate members to boards to help ensure quorums and continuity. Jason explained alternates would be appointed and sit through meetings or be dismissed when not needed, carry the same term limits as regular members, and could step in when vacancies or absences would otherwise deny quorum. He also reviewed state guidance that Board of Adjustment (BOA) members are subject to three-year term limits, while current local language referenced five-year terms; staff said it will consult the city attorney and bring a formal recommendation before implementation.
The board agreed to think about possible alternates and to revisit the matter at upcoming meetings. With no further business, members moved, seconded and approved adjournment by voice/hand vote.
