Public commenters urge transparency, accuse Seminole schools of retaliation and litigation against families
Summary
Two public commenters offered sharply different views: a parent praised staff help for a student's mental‑health crisis, while Nina Sandberg accused the district of retaliation against students with disabilities, wasteful spending and using litigation against families. Board counsel requested a closed executive session on pending litigation (Arents v. Seminole County School Board).

At the June 16 Seminole County School Board meeting, public comment highlighted both praise for district student supports and repeated allegations of retaliation and litigation against families.
Parent Tracy Harbin told the board that district staff provided coordinated help when her child suffered a mental‑health crisis, naming Principal Little, school resource officer James, school counselor Tenisha Caster, nurse Nancy LaCasse and county licensed clinical social worker Heather Page as staff who guided the family through hospital‑homebound services and transition back to school. "The Seminole County staff were amazing in facilitating this transition," Harbin said.
By contrast, public commenter Nina Sandberg used her time to allege a long pattern of retaliation by school and district employees against students — especially those with disabilities — and criticized the district for what she called "malicious litigation" against families, the purchase of large flat-screen TVs, cafeteria furniture changes and other spending decisions. Sandberg told the board she believed district attorneys had been used to "bankrupt" families and urged greater transparency, including videotaping and posting meetings and policy proposals.
Separately during board business, School Board Attorney Cole Palmer asked the board to schedule a closed litigation executive session on July 28, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. concerning pending litigation in Arents v. Seminole County School Board, case number 25 2025 CA-001698. Palmer said outside counsel Michael Begley and associate Eric Watson and a court reporter would attend and that he was seeking guidance on next steps.
Board members did not take formal action on Sandberg’s allegations at the meeting. The district’s public agenda shows that two personnel‑related items (a school resource deputy agreement and a safety and security director agreement for 2026–27) were pulled from the June agenda and will be returned in July.
What’s next: The board will hold further discussion when the pulled agenda items return; the July 28 executive session (if scheduled as requested) will address the Arents litigation.
