Committee to request more dune and plover signage after bird‑walk concerns

A committee member who attended a recent bird walk told the meeting that existing signage was sparse in places and recommended additional, informative signs to discourage dune crossings and protect piping plovers. Staff agreed signs help but warned that many signs are stolen or missing by season’s end and that some residents complain about sign clutter.

The committee member said the more descriptive signs seen at a nearby open house ‘‘get people thinking’’ and might reduce dune incursions. Staff said a practical step is to email Natural Resources (Aaron) to request replacement or additional plover and dune signs; staff also suggested that some of the higher‑quality printed signs are likely to be taken and theft is an expected loss.

Members discussed where signs are most needed (parking lots and paths at Chapin and other beaches) and agreed the staff should coordinate with Natural Resources and share photographic examples with Aaron so the department can evaluate availability and cost. No formal vote was taken; staff will follow up by email and report back.
