Committee: Beaches brought in a record $3 million this season

The staff presentation included additional breakdowns: resident stickers (13,523 this year vs. 13,548 last year), weekly passes (24,197 this year vs. 23,52 last year as reported by staff), seasonal $190 stickers (760 this year vs. 679 last year) and nonresident counts (212 this year vs. 217 last year). Chair framed the numbers as a team result: “A lot of hard work by a lot of hardworking people and departments throughout the whole town.”
Staff and members discussed conditions that affect both unit sales and staffing: a largely dry late summer, earlier school start dates that pull seasonal workers away before Labor Day, and decisions to leave some smaller beaches unstaffed late in the season. Staff explained how lifeguard coverage and gate staffing were prioritized for higher‑use beaches and that some resident‑only beaches had limited gate activity because they host lessons or other programs rather than day‑pass sales.
The committee asked staff to distribute a more detailed comparison (seasonal unit counts and revenue by beach) at the next meeting. Staff said it will provide an itemized copy that goes back several years so members can review trends.
The committee did not take a formal vote on the revenue report; members accepted the figures for planning and outreach purposes. The committee’s next regular meeting was scheduled for October 9.
