Chair Jayer said the commission aims to "work with the architect to maintain the look and feel of the area before decisions are finalized," and members argued the surrounding setting ' the placement on the lot, front trees and landscaping ' contributes as much to the historic character as the building itself.
Architect Tom Moore (introduced to the meeting as a guest) described technical constraints on the lot, including a proposed septic field in the back-left corner and wetlands on the right that limit alterations; he and commissioners discussed how plantings and placement of a garage or breezeway could reduce the visual bulk of a new structure from the public way. The commission noted the lot is roughly 0.46 acres and stressed retaining front maples and other visible plantings when possible.
After drafting motion language and agreeing to a short, unified statement to present, the commission took a roll-call vote. The body voted in favor of attending Old King's Highway and presenting the commission's recommendations (motion carried; tally: 6 yes, 0 no). The chair said the commission will attend the meeting and report back after Old King's Highway makes its determination; if Old King's Highway approves a new building, a demolition application will follow and the commission would then consider whether to initiate any statutory delay to pursue preservation options.
The commission emphasized its role is advisory: it cannot preempt Old King's Highway's review but can offer recommendations aimed at retaining the street setting and advocating for replication where full preservation is not feasible. Members asked that the written statement be refined so everyone speaks with a single, succinct voice at the Old King's Highway hearing.
