The Guilford Board of Finance approved the tax collector's recommendation to transfer $101,162.89 in uncollectible taxes from active receivables to the suspense list for the 2023 grand list.
Mary Jane explained the transfer is a standard accounting step for aged receivables and does not stop collection efforts: "Although all of these are eligible to be moved to what we call suspense, the tax collector never stops trying to collect them," she said, adding that amounts moved to suspense sometimes are subsequently recovered.
The board moved and approved the recommendation by voice vote. Members asked procedural questions about signing the paperwork and recording the transfer; staff confirmed the amount and the supporting memorandum dated May 22, 2026 would be processed.
The action removes the listed items from active collection rates for budget reporting while leaving open the administrative option to pursue collections where possible.
