Nutley mayor presents U.S. flag flown from Erbil and honors educator Prudence Subratie

Mayor Kelly presented a United States flag that he said was flown over Erbil Airbase while he was deployed and asked that it be displayed at the Nutley Museum operated by the Nutley Historical Society. "The accompanying flag of the United States of America was proudly flown over Task Force Integrator ... at Erbil Airbase, Iraq on 10 October 2025," he read from a certificate of authenticity and handed the flag and certificate to board staff for transfer to the historical society.

The board also read and approved a proclamation honoring Prudence Subratie for her work advising the Nutley Junior Culture Inclusion and Diversity Council and organizing Nutley High School’s Night of Nations. Subratie, identified in the meeting as an ESL teacher at Nutley High School, accepted the award and said she appreciates the community’s support. "I actually live in Montclair ... I see actually a great thing at Nutley High School," Subratie said, describing student integration and the Night of Nations event.

The presentation highlighted the town’s relationship with veterans and its interest in preserving local memorabilia, and the proclamation emphasized the township’s efforts to promote diversity and inclusion in schools and community events. The board said a second award recipient from last year will be recognized at the next meeting and arranged to obtain a missing commissioner’s signature on the proclamation.

No action requiring further board votes was taken on the flag or the award. The board moved on to other agenda items after brief remarks and photographs.
