Guilford Board presents CABE Student Leadership Awards to two students

At its June 8 meeting the Guilford Board presented Connecticut Association of Boards of Education (CABE) Student Leadership Awards to two Guilford High School students, recognizing leadership in civic engagement, arts and student-run initiatives.
The Guilford Board of Education presented two Connecticut Association of Boards of Education (CABE) Student Leadership Awards at its June 8 meeting, honoring two Guilford High School students for sustained leadership and community contributions.
Board member Ms. Chaffee introduced the awards and read the CABE letter describing the Student Leadership Award, which recognizes distinguished leadership and civic engagement. "Your principal considers you a school leader," Ms. Chaffee read from the letter as she presented the awards.
Ms. Chaffee described the first recipient, Kyra Imani, as a three-year student representative to the board and a driving force for inclusion. According to Ms. Chaffee, Kyra founded an off-campus BIPOC affinity group, helped organize the annual Multicultural Festival and played a key role in a Juneteenth program. The board and audience applauded as Kyra accepted the award.
The second recipient, introduced as Parker Onacilla, was recognized for using photography and social media to build school spirit, contributing more than 600 hours of community service documenting events, participating on athletic teams and helping to refresh a student business club. The board presented both students with plaques and members took photographs to mark the occasion.
The board thanked the students' families and guardians and closed the presentation with applause. The awards were moved on the agenda earlier in the meeting by board action.
