Volunteers remove 6.5 tons of trash from Lake James shoreline, organizers say

Howard Morgan and Jerry Fanfry reported to the Burke County Board of Commissioners that the Lake James Litter Cleanup on March 14 removed 6½ tons of debris and involved 152 volunteers, including 97 students who received community service letters. Organizers credited area businesses, state park rangers and dock builders for equipment and logistics used to collect large items, including dock floats and large Styrofoam pieces.
Speakers emphasized that the cleanup is a multi‑organization effort requiring months of planning and thanked local food vendors and landfill partners. Presenters also highlighted parking and management issues at a canoe portage area where unmanaged access continues to create debris and safety concerns; they asked for ongoing attention from Duke Energy and state park officials.
The board accepted the report and recognized volunteers for their work.
