Superintendent details school garden plan, Title I monitoring and staff training ahead of state testing

WENDEN, Ariz. — At the Feb. 24 meeting of the Wenden Elementary School Board of Trustees, Superintendent Gloria Dean outlined several district activities and near-term obligations.
Dean said the district has begun planning to restructure a school-wide garden and met with La Paz County Superintendent Mr. Lewis and members of his team—including Ariana Flores and Jessica Hernandez—and staff from the La Paz Probation Department, led by Christina Hernandez, who will assist the school in “laying the foundation and tools for the restructuring of our school garden.” (Language reported from the superintendent's administrative remarks.)
On extracurricular achievements, Dean reported that Wenden students Karla Avila and Miguel Felix represented the school at the La Paz County Spelling Bee on Feb. 19; Salome Elementary won the county competition.
Dean also said the Arizona Department of Education conducted Title I monitoring on Feb. 23, 2026. She told the board the district no longer receives Title I grant funding and therefore must ensure required cycle documents are uploaded to the state portal; specifics of documents and any corrective actions were not detailed in the minutes.
Finally, Dean said the district will provide professional development for instructional staff on Feb. 27 from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. to prepare for state testing scheduled to begin March 30, 2026.
The board did not take separate action on these informational items during the meeting.
