Superintendent reports staff training, RTI reintroduction and 77 students enrolled on first day

Superintendent Gloria Dean briefed the Wenden Elementary School Board at its Aug. 19 meeting on start-of-year staffing, professional development and curriculum supports.
Dean said teachers returned on Aug. 4 and staff spent time getting acquainted with new employees and reviewing 2024–25 data to identify interventions. She said the district will reintroduce Response To Intervention (RTI) as part of the curriculum and will offer an after-school "Enrichment" program for students meeting or exceeding state standards; listed options included Origami, Robotics, Guitar, Dance and Cake Decorating.
Dean reported that on Aug. 5 teachers attended online gradebook training and on Aug. 6 all staff completed Vector-required training facilitated by the district's school attorney, Jessica Sanchez. She described an Aug. 7 staff field trip to local community sites to familiarize teachers with valley businesses and said a planned trip to Alamo Dam would support 3rd–4th grade Arizona state standards, with outreach to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers under consideration.
The superintendent said the first day of school, Aug. 11, had enrollment of 77 students and that staffing was complete at the start of the year after several recent hires. Open House was held Aug. 14. Dean's report was presented for the board's information; no formal action was recorded on these items.
