The Selectboard on Feb. 10 formally authorized the removal of the Red Bridge and approved a separate land sale for a nearby turnaround parcel.
Highway Director Jason Finley said the board had selected a contractor in June but the decision was not reflected in the minutes; he recommended accepting a $38,500 quote from Bonneau & Son Excavation, noting the contractor is local and the price was within $500 of the lowest bid. Finley added the Town of Canaan is expected to cover half of the removal cost and would confirm funding before work proceeds. The board voted to authorize Finley to proceed; the motion (made by Amber Lambke and seconded by Kevin Nelson) passed 5-0.
Separately, the Selectboard moved to authorize Town Manager Nicholas Nadeau and Finley to execute and expend the close-of-sale agreement of $16,000 for the turnaround parcel at 153 Red Bridge Road, drawing funds from the Sale of Town Owned Property Capital Reserve. The motion, made by Kevin Nelson and seconded by Ethan Liberty, passed 5-0.
Why it matters: The removal and parcel sale involve local infrastructure maintenance and disposition of town property; the town expects cost-sharing from an adjacent municipality and has recorded the sales action so the transactions can move forward.
Next steps: Canaan must confirm its funding share for the bridge removal before work begins; town staff were authorized to execute sale paperwork for 153 Red Bridge Rd.
