Parents and a seventh‑grade student tell board bullying and a false gun allegation left a family barred from school

At the start of the Flint Board of Education meeting, multiple public commenters pressed the district over persistent bullying at Brownell STEM Academy and what they described as inadequate staff response. A parent who identified herself as Arice Young said she was banned from campus after being accused of bringing a gun to school – an allegation she denied and said was relayed to her by school security and an officer identified in the meeting as Officer Huie.

"I was the one that was accused of having a gun on school grounds," Arice Young said, describing being barred for the school year and then followed by staff when she attended her daughter's graduation. Young said her primary concern is her children's safety and that Principal "Miss Shay" and school staff did not act to stop repeated bullying.

A seventh‑grade student, Amaria Armor, described repeated refusal by classroom staff to take bullying reports seriously. "My teacher would tell me, 'Don't tell me anything unless you're bleeding or hurt,'" Amaria said. She said teachers dismissed repeated verbal and physical harassment, and that on one occasion a substitute principal contacted Miss Shay, who told the substitute she "didn't have time for it" and that Amaria should be suspended.

Speakers alleged an escalation of incidents, including a report that another student stabbed a classmate with scissors. Commenters asked the board to investigate whether staff had appropriate training in conflict resolution and to review decisions that led to the student's removal from school.

Board members did not take formal action during public comment but several trustees later acknowledged the concerns and directed that follow‑up occur through the superintendent and finance or operations committees where appropriate. The board did not resolve the specific allegations at the meeting; board staff and legal counsel were asked to follow up and report back.
