The Berkeley County Solid Waste Authority voted May 20 to authorize a sick-leave policy for full-time employees and to adopt a ban on employee possession of weapons while on duty at county recycling centers, pending county legal review.
Lynne Lashley, one of the authority’s staff members, asked the board to implement a sick day policy in lieu of an insurance stipend; Lou Scavnicky moved to authorize the program manager to implement the amended sick-leave policy, and Michele Atha seconded. The motion passed unanimously.
Lashley also expressed concern about staff having weapons at the recycling centers and asked the board for guidance. Matthew Grove moved to implement a policy banning weapon possession by employees while on duty at the centers, subject to approval by the Berkeley County Commissioner's legal staff; Lou Scavnicky seconded. The board approved the motion unanimously, with the policy contingent on the county legal review.
The measures were taken as part of the authority’s regular business items. The meeting record does not include the policy text or an effective date; the authority recorded only that the actions were authorized and that the no-weapons policy requires county legal approval before it takes effect.
