Joe Ferrari, who said he is renovating a Westridge Road property for a Big Lu's Pizza location, asked the board for permission to install an oversized building-mounted sign. The original design totaled roughly 123 sq ft, exceeding the 50-square-foot limit in the code. Board members expressed concern about scale and visibility because the building sits close to the sidewalk.
After discussion about sign dimensions, illumination, attachment method, and prior approvals, Ferrari agreed to reduce the primary sign to 30 feet in length by 3 feet in height (90 sq ft), to use letters mounted on a raceway, to illuminate the sign with LED-style bulb lighting, and to limit illumination to a half-hour before opening and a half-hour after closing. He also agreed to relinquish prior signage approvals (including any pylon approvals) tied to the property.
The board treated the application as an unlisted SEQR action and issued a negative declaration. The board’s motion approved the variance subject to the conditions that Mr. Ferrari obtain all required permits, the sign not exceed 90 sq ft, and that all previous signage approvals be relinquished. Ferrari told the board he expects to open on September 1.
The board recorded the motion and voted unanimously to approve the sign variance with the stated conditions.
