Bennet council approves Highway 43 parade closure, $14,000 fireworks budget and Saturday closure for Firefly Festival

The Bennet City Council voted unanimously to allow a July 4 parade that requires a temporary closure of Highway 43 and to fund a fireworks display tied to the United States’ 250th anniversary.
Presenter Lillie Chambers asked the council to close Highway 43 using the same times and map used in prior years. Mayor Ryan Cheney introduced Resolution 2026-2.1 approving the temporary use; Council member Dan Zieg moved and Council member Pete Simmons seconded the motion, and a roll call vote was unanimous.
Chambers also requested the council approve a fireworks budget of $14,000 for a display connected to the 250th celebrations. Pete Simmons moved and Dan Zieg seconded approval of the fireworks line item; the council voted unanimously to allocate $14,000.
Separately, Kristin Nelson appeared on behalf of BEDA for questions about a Block Party application tied to the Firefly Festival scheduled for June 12–13. Nelson asked to close Garden Street at Madison starting Friday at 10:00 PM through Saturday at midnight; after discussion the council agreed instead to close Garden Street on Saturday, June 13 from morning until midnight and directed staff to prepare a resolution for the March 9 meeting.
These actions establish event permissions and budget authority; staff will complete any required traffic-control coordination and process the formal resolution for the Firefly Festival at the March meeting.
