Board approves $50,000 welding grant, university agreements and shared personnel arrangement

At its June 15 meeting the Burlington Community School District board approved several operational items and grants.
The board approved a $50,000 workforce grant from the American Welding Society Foundation to purchase four new welders for the district’s welding program. Administration said the timing aligns with the district’s semester schedule and that the equipment will expand student access.
The board also approved field-site affiliation agreements with Walden University for placements in education and allied programs including nursing, social work, counseling, psychology and health services. Staff said the district has occasionally hired student teachers who have come through similar agreements with area institutions.
Separately, the board approved a one-year shared personnel agreement with the West Burlington Independent School District to share a media specialist at 20 percent time (one day per week). The arrangement will return 20 percent of salary and benefits to Burlington; board members discussed monitoring how time is allocated and contingency plans if coverage needs change.
The board also approved a 3% increase in transportation staff base wages and voted to table four staff handbooks for further review at a June 29 work session so the incoming superintendent can participate.
