Beaver Creek governing board holds work study on member roles, support for superintendent

U’Ren told board members they are part of the district’s “vision-making team” and urged them to define what they want to see happen in the district so the superintendent can draft a single vision statement for the board to refine. She emphasized that board members have no individual authority and that decisions must be made collectively in legally convened meetings and supported publicly once passed.
“Being a board member is hard work; there must be commitment to grow and work together as a team,” U’Ren said, framing teamwork and sustained effort as central to the role. She advised members to direct issues to the superintendent rather than handling them individually and to submit questions ahead of meetings so staff can prepare a response for the full board.
U’Ren also urged practical governance practices: read agendas and supporting documents before meetings; attend and engage thoughtfully; and, when opposing a vote, provide a brief explanation grounded in data rather than personal interest. She recommended that board members and staff model the conduct they want students to emulate.
The presenter outlined specific administrative steps the district is taking to support governance: development of an annual governing-board calendar, preparation of a monthly budget report, and creation of a Governing Board Procedure guide to be reviewed annually. District staff on hand included Allie Wheeler, superintendent/principal, and Ori Womack, business manager.
Closing remarks noted Beaver Creek’s small but diverse community context and organizational stability, with the minutes recording that the district has had three superintendents in more than 40 years. The session concluded without formal motions or votes; next steps recorded in the minutes include continued work on the calendar, budget-report format, and the procedure guide for future board review.
