Village of Coon Valley raises housing shortage, dam decommissioning and traffic concerns to county committee

Matt Helgerson, President and Trustee of the Village of Coon Valley, briefed the Vernon County Economic Development Committee on May 7 about local development and infrastructure concerns.
Helgerson said housing availability is limited: two homes are under construction, demand is high, and the village has little land available for development because of waterways that constrain buildable lots. He also reported three new businesses — Rudy’s Pour Choices, 1905 Tap & Brew, and Lucy’s Tacos — have recently opened in the village.
Helgerson raised concerns about dam decommissioning and what removal or alteration of dams may mean for the community during heavy rain and flooding events. He also noted anticipated traffic impacts related to Highway 14 road construction and a planned sewer project in 2027.
The committee received the update as informational; no formal actions were taken on these topics at the May 7 meeting.
