On a separate application for PowerUp Studio (Unit 20, Macedonia Commons), staff reported the proposed two-line wall sign measured just under 30 square feet and met area and mounting requirements once minor dimensional clarifications were addressed. The planning packet included owner approval of the tenant's sign submission.
The primary point of contention was color. Staff explained the sign code's intent language (117901) limits signage to primary and complimentary colors; black is neither. The applicant said the logo-based sign appears black by day and white when illuminated. Commissioners debated whether "complimentary" could be interpreted to allow black or whether an explicit record accepting black on the common sign package was required.
A commissioner moved to approve PowerUp Studio subject to administrative review for conformance with staff's May 9 memo and to note that the commission accepts black as an allowable color for the Macedonia Commons sign package. The motion carried.
What happens next: Both approvals were documented in the meeting record. The Highland Point approval requires the applicant to submit a landscaping plan for administrative review before final sign installation; the PowerUp approval proceeds through administrative review for technical conformance with staff comments.
