County prepares for July 1 speed‑limit change and Steuart Road detour shift

Of broader public interest, staff emphasized that an Iowa statutory change will raise the maximum speed limit on paved rural highways from 55 mph to 60 mph effective July 1. County staff said they will replace the limited number of 55‑mph signs the county has, and will review stop‑ahead signs, pavement markings and no‑passing zones to ensure compliance; they noted the Iowa Department of Transportation is also working on guidance.
Staff cautioned there is no apparent grace period: "Just July one we go to 60 mph," and described the administrative burden of checking curves and markings county‑wide. The county said it will prioritize sites with higher traffic, and indicated the number of county 55‑mph signs is small compared with other counties.
