Director reports summer activities and honors retirees; nutrition and facility upgrades outlined

Dr. Elliot, the districts director of schools, reviewed end-of-year highlights and summer plans, and thanked staff for a busy close to the 202526#x2013;26 year.
He recounted a string of end-of-year events — teacher appreciation, graduation at the Raider Arena, spring athletics and arts, and a new student-driven Blue Sea Awards night — and described summer programs such as riding, reading and STEM camps and a district book bus stop. He also asked board members to review cost-center mappings ahead of the new fiscal year and to submit clarifying questions.
The board recognized a long list of retirees for 2026. Human resources assistant director Mr. Kaiser introduced retirees and certificates were presented to staff including Kathy Blackner (ESC), Angela Gardner (Candies Creek Cherokee Elementary), Miriam Anderson (52 years in special education), Doug Moore, Dr. David Stone, Dr. Aaron Hatabal, Don Markham, Zach Riggins, Punky (Linda) Gibson, Maryanne Poppin and Melissa Bishop.
Kathy Barry, supervisor of school nutrition, told the board the districts Community Eligibility Provision that allows universal free breakfast and lunch remains in place for two more years before the district must reapply. Barry said meal totals fund the program, highlighted the fresh fruit and vegetable program for elementary schools, and noted daily cafeteria participation runs about 50to60% depending on the school. She also reported equipment bids are underway and some kitchen oven installations were scheduled.
Facilities and operations staff reviewed a slate of summer projects. Items included a proposed turf/line-marking robot (estimated at about $14,000 per year), an $848,825 bid combining east-wing roof replacement and the Arnold Auditorium project at the high school, an emergency electrical-panel repair at the high school estimated near $25,000 with potential HVAC pump work, Mayfield elevator control replacement awarded to United Elevator for $97,672.50, and a cooling-tower project with an initial estimate near $400,000 pending final calculation. The Yates gym floor replacement was expected to start after the Fourth of July with completion targeted by July 30; the contract included liquidated damages of $500 per day.
The board received the updates and asked staff to return with final cost figures and schedules where projects were still pending.
