The City Council on June 15 approved Resolution 26‑153 authorizing purchase of a 9.914‑acre tract east of the East Mesa Sports Complex that the staff said would allow expansion of recreation facilities and support regional tournaments.
Diane Bustillos of Economic Development presented two appraisals — one at $217,000 and a second at $357,500 — and said the parties negotiated a midpoint purchase price of $287,250 (transcript figures). Staff described potential uses including trails, multi‑use fields, pickleball courts, additional parking and an urban fishing pond; the parcel previously contained a gravel pit and is adjacent to a roughly 350‑acre area the city leases from the Bureau of Land Management for the East Mesa complex.
Councilors asked clarification questions about appraisal timing and the negotiation; staff said appraisals can vary and the parties had met in the middle on price and splitting closing costs. The council voted to approve the resolution by roll call; Councilor Munoz was recorded absent.
Ending: With council approval, staff may proceed with closing and begin planning for integration with the East Mesa Sports Complex.
