At the June 15 meeting of the Upper Moreland Parks & Recreation committee, resident Phoebe Park of 117 Grand Avenue urged officials to move forward on safer bicycle infrastructure after seeing more cyclists on Route 611 and local streets.
"I've been seeing cyclists everywhere throughout our Township ... especially on 611," Phoebe Park said, adding that she’s concerned about high-speed segments where drivers travel about 40 miles per hour. "We all know [at those speeds] it results in a 90% chance of fatality for those who are hit," she said.
Township staff said the active-transportation plan, prepared as a presentation by graduate students at Temple University, has been completed and is currently under internal review. Staff said they expect to discuss the report internally first and then bring it to the appropriate public forum for further comment and possible committee consideration.
When asked which committee would receive the item, staff said that decision will depend on their internal review but that it will most likely be presented to the Parks & Recreation committee. Staff also said that issues such as e-bike rules could be included when the report returns to the agenda.
The committee did not take action on the plan at the June 15 meeting. Staff did not provide a public schedule for when the report will next appear on an agenda.
