LaPorte County commissioners approve payroll, claims, rezoning ordinances, settlement and engineering appointment

LaPorte County commissioners on June 3 approved a series of routine and substantive actions: payroll and operating claims, two rezoning ordinances, a legal settlement and the appointment of a county engineer.
Auditor Mike Rosenbaum read payroll totaling $1,510,149.22 for the pay period ending May 29, 2026, and operating expense claims of $1,682,329.91; the board approved both by unanimous vote. Rosenbaum also told the board that monthly local income tax (LIT) distributions in excess of $5,000,000 would be distributed among municipalities later in the week, set a tax settlement date of June 9 and a tax sale date of Oct. 13.
On land-use matters, the commissioners approved second readings for two rezoning petitions: Watson and Johnson in Coolspring Township (R1B to B2) as Ordinance 2026-3, and Leeway IN Properties in Center Township (B3 to R1B) as Ordinance 2026-4. Both ordinances passed 3-0 on second reading.
The board approved a settlement agreement in the case Javon Britton v. LaPorte County Sheriff John Boyd in the amount of $29,925; the case was filed in 2019. The board also confirmed the appointment of Mike Yacullo as county engineer, with Human Resources Director Monique Thomas telling the board the salary was set at $108,000 — an increase from $86,216 previously. Yacullo said he has previously brought federal and state aid to county infrastructure projects.
Other administrative items approved included Data Board amendments and direction to place Commissioner Joe Haney’s appointment to the GIS Board on the Council agenda. The meeting record also corrected a drafting error in prior minutes (the May 20 minutes should have referenced May 6, 2026). The board adjourned at 10:27 a.m.
