Board approves preliminary 2026–27 budget while flagging SRO costs and fund‑80 levy risk
Summary
The board accepted a preliminary 2026–27 budget but members raised concerns that the district's fund‑80 community‑service levy (used largely for SRO costs) — set at a $750,000 placeholder — and a roughly $710,000 fund balance could be depleted in about two years unless revenue or expenses change.

The Mosinee School District board voted to accept a preliminary 2026–27 budget after a lengthy discussion about longer‑term funding pressures, including the cost of school resource officers (SROs) and the fund‑80 community service levy.
Rod presented the draft budget and said the state revenue‑limit increase was modest and the district faces a three‑year average enrollment decline of about 55 students. He told members that the budget currently assumes a fund‑80 levy of roughly $750,000 — the levy that funds community service items — and that the district's fund‑80 balance is about $710,000, which he estimated would provide roughly two years of cushion at current expenditure levels.
Board members pressed administration on options if SRO costs continue to rise: increase the fund‑80 levy (passing higher costs directly to taxpayers), reallocate general‑fund dollars to cover SRO expenses (reducing classroom spending flexibility), or lower SRO program expenditures. One board member noted the district could phase in levy increases gradually rather than a single large jump.
The discussion also covered timing and uncertainty in state aid. Rod said July 1 typically yields an initial state aid estimate by statute, but numbers can shift depending on statewide reporting; he urged caution in setting final levy amounts until state figures stabilize.
After discussion, the board approved the preliminary budget and allowed administration to continue refining numbers for the August and October stages of the budget cycle when the district will return with more detailed estimates and levy recommendations.
Action: The board voted to accept the preliminary 2026–27 budget and authorized administration to proceed with final budget development; no immediate change to the fund‑80 levy was approved.
