Park County commission appoints Theodore Dykstra to complete sheriff's term through 2026

The Park County Board of Commissioners on Feb. 10 appointed Theodore ("Tad") Dykstra to complete the current sheriff's term after Sheriff Bigler submitted his resignation effective Feb. 13.
Maritza (staff) told the commission that Sheriff Bigler had recommended Tad as his successor and that the appointee would serve through the end of the year and still face election for the office in 2026. Several public speakers — including a longtime county employee and a local resident who identified himself as Tad's campaign treasurer — spoke in support, describing Tad as a trusted deputy and an experienced department leader.
A motion to appoint Theodore Dykstra was moved, seconded and approved by voice vote. Commissioners said they had confidence in the recommended successor and that the appointment would provide continuity for the sheriff's office through the remainder of the term.
What happens next: The appointment takes effect when Sheriff Bigler's resignation becomes effective Feb. 13; Tad will serve the remainder of the term and, if he intends to continue in office beyond 2026, will be required to run in the regularly scheduled election.
