Commission approves grants for car show, quilt show, Bell Park tournament, library program and Greenwood Experience kickoff

Commissioners reviewed and approved multiple community grant requests during the meeting, voting on each by motion and voice vote.

Randy requested continued support for the Special County Fair car show and the commission approved a $3,000 grant to help cover event costs. A representative of the South Spash County Historical Society of the Quilts asked for funding for the quilt show and, after a correction to the number in discussion, commissioners approved approximately $3,249 to support that event; the presenter said attendance has hovered around 600 in recent years.

The 18th annual Battle of Bell Park organizers reported day-of player numbers around 144 and overall visitor estimates in the low hundreds; commissioners approved a $7,000 grant for that event. Commissioners also discussed the children's hospital doubles tournament (Justin Horn is passing organizational duties to WAFTA) and expected another grant request at a future meeting; the commission noted that tournament proceeds benefit the children's hospital.

A Friends of the Library representative requested funds for the Sebastian County Library's summer reading program (serving Greenwood, Mansfield, Laca, Hartford and Walurn branches) and commissioners approved $3,500 to support programming that runs through July 17 and expects roughly 500 child participants across branches.

Finally, a Greenwood High School theater teacher representing the Greenwood Experience described an educational series culminating in a free concert and asked for $4,000 to cover bounce-house rentals and a modest band stipend. Commissioners discussed funding splits (roughly $3,000 for bounce houses and $1,000 for bands), settled on the $4,000 request, and approved the grant by voice vote.
