Zoning board approves sign variances for new Cash for Cans location

The Town of Newburgh Zoning Board of Appeals voted unanimously Feb. 26 to grant area variances allowing Cash for Cans to install a replacement freestanding sign at 158 North Plank Road.
Applicant representative Surjeet Bassi told the board the new sign would occupy the existing sign location and that without signage "there's no business." The board confirmed mailings were sent to 41 neighbors and reviewed the request as a Type 2 action under SEQRA, describing the proposal as a replacement in kind.
Board members applied the five-factor area-variance test and found no undesirable neighborhood impacts or adverse physical effects. Ms. Latwan Banks made the motion to approve; Mr. James Eberhart seconded. The roll call showed all members voting aye and Chairman Darrin Scalzo announced the motion carried and the variances were approved.
Next steps: applicant may proceed with installation subject to any building department requirements and standard sign-permit procedures.
